Private Pickleball Lessons in Honolulu – How to Find the Perfect Coach for You
Choosing the right pickleball coach in Honolulu can be tricky. Many people claim to be the best, but it’s up to you to make an informed decision like anything else.
I’ve taught tennis for over half my life and coached pickleball in Honolulu for several years. Before becoming a coach, I was trained by professional coaches who knew what they were doing. I could tell they were great by the results they achieved with their students. If they could help others improve, why not me too—right?
What Is the Perfect Pickleball Coach for Me?
The perfect pickleball coach isn’t just someone who plays well—someone who can help you play better. Many great players can’t teach, and some great teachers don’t play well. That’s why finding the right coach is a personal decision—what works for one person might not work for another.
These are the tips I use when choosing a coach—not just for pickleball, but for any sport.

Look for a coach who:
A great coach understands your goals and tailors each lesson accordingly.
For example, I work with players who have medical conditions that limit their movement or playing ability, but that doesn’t stop them from becoming the best version of themselves on the court. The key is recognizing their goals—staying active, having fun, or improving as much as possible—and building around that.
2. Gives clear, honest feedback.
This is especially important to me. I don’t want a coach who just tries to make me feel good—I want someone who tells me the truth, even if it’s tough to hear. Honest feedback, paired with clear goals, helps me improve faster. Too many coaches focus on comfort over progress, leaving players stuck at the same level for far too long.
3. Has a proven track record of helping students improve.
Ask your coach who they’ve worked with and who’s actually improved under their guidance. If you’re in Honolulu, you might recognize the names of players they’ve helped. If not, check their reviews—great coaches usually have plenty of happy students eager to share their experiences.
4. Stays patient, supportive, and fully engaged.
A good coach keeps you focused, challenged, and motivated throughout the session. But if they mostly talk and struggle to push you to your potential or offer clear direction, it may be a sign they’re not the right fit for you.
5. Makes learning fun while still helping you grow
Fun should always be part of the game. In my pickleball lessons in Honolulu, I’ve seen how much more students learn when they enjoy themselves. I even see it with my kids—if they’re not having a great time, they lose interest quickly. One of my adult students once said, “I want to have as much fun as your kids have with you,” that stuck with me.
A great pickleball coach—whether it’s me or anyone else—should create a positive, engaging learning environment. They should bring energy, a strong personality, and a passion for helping you grow. Because when you’re having fun, you’ll keep showing up—and that’s when real progress happens.
6. What you pay for a pickleball coach often reflects the value you receive.
It is not always true that more expensive is better, but more often than not, it is true. The more expensive pickleball coaches have a proven track record and strong referral base, which allows them to charge more. Quite often, they are certified and very good coaches who value every single pickleball student equally.
It’s not about finding the most famous coach—it’s about finding someone who helps you become the best version of yourself on the court. And that’s easier said than done.
What Kind of Pickleball Coach Would I Hire for My Kids in Honolulu?
After sharing how to choose the right pickleball coach in Honolulu, here’s my personal checklist—what I’d look for if I were hiring the best coach I could afford for my kids:
Do they send lesson reminders?
- We all get busy—getting a reminder the day before is a simple but thoughtful touch.
Do they coach on real pickleball courts—not in a parking lot?
- A proper environment matters—especially for kids learning good habits early. But sometimes, you just set up a net and chalk the lines. You make the most of what you have.
Can they make my kids smile while still pushing them to improve?
- The perfect mix of fun and challenge is essential.
Do they have enough pickleball balls?
- A coach showing up with just eight balls in their basket is not prepared to run an efficient lesson.
Do they start on time?
- Punctuality shows professionalism and respect for your time.
Have they taught kids at the same level before?
- Experience with similar players ensures they know how to coach effectively at that stage.
Everything I’ve written here is based on my experience as a player and a coach. Exploring your options is essential when choosing the right pickleball coach in Honolulu. Unless you’re confident the first coach you try is the perfect fit, I recommend working with 1–3 coaches to see who best aligns with your goals, personality, and learning style. The right fit can truly elevate your game and enjoyment on the court.
