Hawaii Pickleball Open®: History, Vision & Growth

The Hawaii Pickleball Open® started in 2024 with a simple idea: build a tournament we would personally want to play—organized, competitive, welcoming, and small enough that players still feel connected to the people running it.

The Philosophy Behind the Tournament

We do not judge the event only by how many registrations we can fit onto the courts. A tournament can get bigger while the player experience gets worse.

Enough matchesPlayers should feel that the entry fee produces meaningful court time.
Realistic schedulingWe build in buffer instead of selling every theoretical court minute.
Clear communicationPlayers should know the format, timing, weather plan, and what happens next.
Community feelWe want organizers, volunteers, and players to know one another—not feel like anonymous bracket numbers.

How the Hawaii Pickleball Open® Has Grown

2024 — The First Hawaii Pickleball Open®

The inaugural tournament was held August 24–25, 2024, at King Intermediate School in Kāneʻohe. It established the basic format and community-focused approach that we continued building on.

2025 — Second Annual Event

The tournament returned in August 2025 with a similar community structure and stronger competition. The second year helped us improve scheduling, operations, volunteer roles, and player communication.

March 2026 — Singles Championship

We added our first Hawaii Pickleball Open® event dedicated entirely to singles. Thirty players competed across five divisions, and severe weather forced us to use an indoor backup plan.

August 29–30, 2026 — Third Annual Hawaii Pickleball Open®

The event returned to King Intermediate with more than 100 players across 10 courts. The tournament used round-robin play, medals, Franklin balls, and a $600 Money Ball prize. Most matches used a best-of-three-to-11 format, while some divisions used games to 15 depending on the draw and schedule.

Why We Care About Match Format

The older version of this article said every match at every Hawaii Pickleball Open® was always best two out of three games to 11. That is too absolute.

Our preference is to give players meaningful match play, and many divisions use best-of-three games to 11, win by two. But tournament format can change by event, division size, court availability, weather, or scheduling needs. Some 2026 matches were played to 15.

For current events: always use the registration page for the exact scoring format, match guarantee, division structure, and refund/weather policies.

What Players Receive Beyond Matches

Depending on the event, the Hawaii Pickleball Open® has included tournament shirts, medals, water, food, prizes, photography, and other player-experience elements. Those details can change from one event to another, so we no longer describe every item as guaranteed in every future tournament.

Competition Levels

Our events have included skill-based divisions from recreational tournament levels through advanced/Open play. Age divisions and skill levels vary based on the event and registration numbers.

Open and Money Ball divisions have also included prize money. The exact amount is event-specific rather than a permanent guaranteed prize pool.

Why We Expanded Beyond One Annual Event

In 2026 we experimented with a broader series structure that included singles, mixed doubles, and doubles events. Each format creates a different test:

SinglesMovement, conditioning, serve/return quality, passing shots, and individual decision-making.
Mixed DoublesTeam chemistry, role clarity, communication, and tactical adjustments.
DoublesPositioning, resets, counters, middle coverage, and coordinated point construction.
Money Ball / OpenHigher-level competition with event-specific prize money.

The Brand & Name

We secured HawaiiPickleballOpen.com early because the name was simple and directly connected to the event. The Hawaii Pickleball Open® name is part of the long-term brand we are building alongside Hawaii Pickleball Academy®.

The logo was created to be easy to recognize on shirts, banners, social media, medals, and tournament materials. As the events grow, keeping the name and visual identity consistent matters.

Where We Want to Take the Tournament

Our long-term goal is to grow carefully rather than chase the largest possible player count. That can include larger brackets, stronger Open divisions, more destination players, better sponsorship, and potentially additional events or islands when the operations make sense.

Those are goals—not promises or a fixed published calendar. The exact schedule changes year to year.

Player Development & the Tournament

A tournament gives players something specific to train for. It also exposes weaknesses that can be difficult to see in casual open play. That is one reason the Hawaii Pickleball Open® and Hawaii Pickleball Academy® fit naturally together: training and competition support each other.

Current Registration Information

The old article listed a fixed annual schedule—mid-March singles, late-June mixed doubles, and late-August doubles—as though those dates would continue unchanged every year. We removed that promise.
